Abstract

There is much current interest in the realization of high average power (HAP) solid state lasers at the kilowatt level and beyond. In this paper we review laser devices and system architectures that may be used to reach such power levels, their scaling laws, and review the physics and technology issues that must be taken into account. A comparison of the power handling capability of Nd:LHG-5, Nd:YAG, CR:Alexandrite, and Ti:Sapphire is also shown.
