Abstract

The physical nature of the influence of scandium additions on the mechanical properties of aluminium and Al-based alloys is considered. A positive influence of scandium on aluminium mechanical properties is stipulated by disperse hardening caused by the formation of extremely disperse, coherently bound with the matrix particles of the intermetallic Al 3 Sc. The peculiarities of this process strongly depend on alloying elements in Al-based alloy. There is made a classification of alloying elements which distinguishes 5 groups with taking into account their physical and chemical interaction with aluminium and scandium. As an example there is considered the influence of Sc additions on the structural and mechanical properties of pure Al as well as thermally non-hardened Al-Mg and thermally hardened Al-Zn-Mg, Al-Zn-Mg-Cu and Al-Mg-Li alloys.
