Abstract

Many developmental programs still have the goal to create materials that have properties at least equal to thermoset elastomers. Other goals are improved processing, new fabrication methods, increased softness and silky feel, greater transparency, improved adhesion, and improved compatibility. A great deal of effort is dedicated to the development of medical applications including artificial implants, drug delivery systems, antithrombogenic coatings, and biological adhesives. Another very active area of research and development pertains to biofeedstocks for various TPEs, including COPA, COPE, TPOs, TPVs, and TPUs. A TPO-based single-ply roofing membrane has been introduced to the market and shows a great potential to replace EPDM roofing membrane.
