Abstract

Yield strength variations in Cu due to irradiation with high-energy 11B, 20Ne and 40Ar ion beams are discussed. Based on the high mobility of small interstitial clusters it is supposed that immobile clusters with an appropriate size are “mobilized” due to vacancy absorption, providing an additional source of interstitials. The solution of the rate equations is given. It is shown that if the loss of migrating defects at lattice sinks can be neglected then the variation of the overall numbers of interstitials and vacancies forming clusters is given by identical differential equations.
