Abstract

Actin-myosin kinetics and mechanics are well-characterized at the level of individual myosin molecules; however, the collective behavior of an ensemble of myosin molecules differs significantly from that of the sum of single myosin molecules. For instance, actin movement generated by one myosin molecule is associated with actin-myosin binding, or attachment, whereas actin movement generated by many myosin molecules, N, is influenced by actin-myosin detachment. Major gaps exist in our understanding of the basic chemical kinetics underlying ensemble myosin mechanics.
