Abstract

Co(1 nm)/Mn(t nm) multilayers were prepared by deposition in an ultra high vacuum of 10−10 Torr. The multilayers consist of Mn and Co layers whose (110) and (0001) planes are parallel to the substrate plane, respectively. For multilayers with Mn layer thickness, t, between 1.3 and 3.5 nm, the lattice spacings of Mn layers dilated in the direction normal to their layer plane and ferromagnetism of Mn layers is presumed at specific thickness of Mn layers. This anomalous magnetism of Mn seems to strongly depend on the deposition conditions of the Mn buffer layer.
