Abstract

ABSTRACT This article identifies modes of transfeminine representation outside the figure of the ‘shemale’. Two films, The Surprise of a Knight (circa 1929) and Office Love-In (1968), occupy overlooked points on a genealogy of transfeminine porn. Each provides character archetypes that would later inform the construction of the shemale. The latter half of the article builds on John Mercer’s ‘saturated masculinities’ in analyzing varied portrayals of trans women in present-day online porn. Alongside the shemale, the figures of the ‘ladyboy’, ‘BBC’, and ‘femboy’ represent distinct iterations of pornographic transfeminine bodies. The article considers those distinctions for the purpose of marking the present-day pornotopic imaginings of trans women in porn.
