Abstract

Satire as a literary device is used to criticize or ridicule stupidity, shortcomings, or vices present in people or society using humor, irony, or exaggeration. Indian English poets have also created masterpieces satirizing social and political filth with an intention to agitate and draw attention towards the problems prevailing in the society. Indra Kumar Sharma is also one of those poets. The paper aims at analyzing how through his pen he has written poems of “humor and wit,” highlighting contemporary social issues, values, cultures, norms, tribulations, and trials. For this purpose various poems by the poet have been referred to in the paper. The paper concludes that with the aid of satire, irony, black humor, sarcasm, and wit, he has evolved his poetic technique to such a status that he becomes one of the leading contemporary poets.
