Abstract

The problem of whether Gibson's spatial adaptational effects can be subsumed under K6hler's theory of satiation has received considerable attention in recent years. For example, Morant and Mistovitch, contrary to the prediction from satiational theory, have confirmed the occurrence of Gibson's 'indirect effect' on one spatial axis (apparent vertical or horizontal) of an inspection-line somewhat tilted from the other axis.' Also, Rich and Morant have shown that when the magnitude of the aftereffect of tilt is plotted as a function of angle of inspection-figure, the resulting curve agrees more closely with the prediction that both types of effect are occurring than with the prediction from satiational theory alone.2
