Abstract

An equivalent axis coordinate frame is found for the rest-to-rest reorientation maneuver of a satellite. This effectively transforms the nonlinear satellite control problem into a linear control problem. Within this frame, the satellite motion is a plane motion. Therefore, only one kinematic equation and one dynamic equation are needed. This approach is especially advantageous in the optimal control of the satellite attitude where all the iterative computation will use 2 × 2 matrices instead of 7 × 7 matrices, a two order of magnitude decrease in matrix operation.
