Abstract

To the Editor:— Excessive number of plasma cells in the bone marrow is not of itself evidence of multiple myeloma. Increased numbers have been observed in rheumatoid arthritis, 1 acute rheumatic fever, 2 various collagen disorders and hypersensitivity reactions, 3 hepatic cirrhosis, and Hodgkin's disease. 4,5 The occurrence of plasmacytosis in sarcoidosis is quite unusual. In reviewing 50 cases of nonmalignant plasmacytic disease, Clark and Muirhead included one case of sarcoid with 12.2% plasma cells in the bone marrow, 3 and Klein and Block, in reviewing 60 cases of plasmacytosis, mentioned two cases of sarcoid with bone marrow plasmacytosis. 1 The discovery of sheets of cells with a 19% plasmacytosis in a patient with sarcoidosis forms the basis for this report.
