Abstract

Many UIILW and TRU waste disposal concepts use cement and concrete both as construction materials and providers of favourable near-field chemical conditioning. However, what is gained in the near field may be lost in the geosphere if interaction between high pH water leaving the repository and the host rock results in detrimental perturbations of the far field properties. Hence, assessing the influence of this interaction on the transport of radionuclides in the geosphere is an important factor in safety assessment.
