Abstract

The mixture of 3-methylpyridine (3MP) and heavy water was studied in the concentration range of 0.25–4 mol% at 25°C and 50°C by small-angle neutron scattering. Measurements on the water-rich side of the closed-loop phase diagram showed that the aggregation of 3MP molecules sets in already at very small concentrations. It indicates the presence of effective attractive interactions between the solute molecules, which lead to phase separation at higher concentrations.
