Abstract

Sanitation infrastructure is known to be a basic need for human beings and most people are seen to not even think about the possibility of a lack of it. However, it is seen that over 60% rural households in India do not have access to this basic amenity. This paper deals with the concept of sanitation in terms of three basic structures of civilisation today; environment, development and society. The aim of this paper is to analyse the concept of sanitation on five different fronts encompassing the above three structures. These are population, economics, institutions, political economy, risks and hazards. The concept and the problem associated with the limited availability of the same are addressed by utilising concepts of each of the above perspectives and some suggestions or areas which can be explored are also discussed.
