Abstract

Increasing water demand at the Sandusky, Ohio, Big Island Water Works (BIWW) Treatment Plant is approaching the plant's rated capacity of 18 mgd, and the plant needs expansion. The Sandusky Master Water Plan recommends a phased approach that will allow Sandusky to meet its present and future water quality and quantity needs by using a three‐step process that includes: upgrading the filters and clearwells; conducting a full‐scale demonstration study to gain approval of the capacity at which the BIWW plant can be operated; and, based on results of the demonstration study, the capacity for some unit treatment processes will be expanded to obtain a higher rated capacity. This article describes the upgrading and expanding of the BIWW plant.
