Abstract

A new genus, Sandimenes nov. gen., is established for Periclimenes hirsutus Bruce, 1971a based mainly on its unusual character of the dense, long tufts of setae on the ventral surface of the ambulatory propodi, and the general hirsuteness of the body and appendages. The genera erected or removed from the synonymy of Periclimenes after Bruce's (1994) monograph on the Indo-West Pacific genera of the Pontoniinae are reviewed, and a key to those genera closely similar to Periclimenes is provided.
