Sampling Variability of Paleocurrent Cross-Bed Data in the Post-Myrick Station Channel Sandstone (Pennsylvanian), Missouri

Abstract

Orientations of dips of cross-laminae in a post-Myrick Station channel sandstone in Boone County were tested in a designed experiment for significant lateral and vertical variation. A Chi-square test for significance was used. It was concluded that directions of transport in all parts of the sandstone were uniform. Twenty preliminary measurements yielded almost the same resultant as the final total of 116 measurements. It is suggested that for similar sandstone units, significant orientation data for wide areas is obtainable from relatively few measurements.
