Abstract

The within mound distribution of Solenopsis invicta Buren adults, eggs, larvae, and pupae can be assessed by extraction of soil cores. A metal drain pipe, 3.75 cm diam and 30 cm in length is inserted into various textural classes of soil with minimal soil compaction and maximum adherance. While taking the soil sample ca. 5 ml of methylchloroform (Southwest Trichem MC-96®) are poured in and around the core. The rapid fumigant action kills ants quickly so that their relative position in the mound can be determined upon laboratory examination of the soil core.
