Abstract

Nearly all households in the USA have a mailing address that is used by the United States Postal Service (USPS) for mail delivery and these addresses can be used as a sampling frame that has good coverage properties. The Delivery Sequence File (DSF), which is maintained by the USPS, provides a convenient basis for conducting address-based sampling (ABS). As a sampling frame, the DSF can be used to conduct multi-mode surveys, particularly where telephone numbers can be matched to the DSF. This chapter highlights the value of the DSF for single and multi-mode surveys and also outlines some of the potential problems with using the DSF as a sampling frame.
