Abstract

An inertial impaction sampling device was developed for the purpose of collecting samples of liquid droplet clouds dispersed in a wind tunnel. The device is based on Stoker's smoked slide technique, which enables one to determine the diameters of impacting droplets by measuring the diameters of the impressions left in a soot coating on a glass slide. Incorporated into the sampler design is a rotary shutter mechanism which momentarily exposes eleven slides to the droplet cloud. The exposure time of the shutter can be adjusted so that it is commensurate with the density of the droplet cloud.
