Abstract
The size, spacing, and number of replicate sediment samples collected for foraminiferal analysis do not, in many cases, adequately represent the living population. In the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the living foraminifera counted in replicate samples show a pronounced patchy geographic distribution in waters less than 24 m deep; species proportions in replicate samples are most variable in waters less than 20 m deep. A significant number of living specimens was encountered to a depth of 9 cm in the bottom sediments.
