Abstract

The minimization of the average local kriging variance and the minimization of the maximum local kriging variance are developed as alternatives to the often published global kriging variance criterion for the design of an infill sampling program during geologic site characterization. Following this, the computational details for a kriging variance updating procedure are presented. This procedure offers at least two orders of magnitude reduction in the computational effort required for quantitative sample design when compared to a naive kriging implementation.
