Abstract

Abstract In evaluating combustion processes for their contribution of benzo(a) pyrene and other potential carcinogens to the atmosphere, the materials of interest may be lost during sampling unless the collection temperature is controlled. Cooling of the gases under both wet and dry conditions has been tried. This study demonstrates that collection of benzo(a)pyrene from high temperature gas streams can be effectively accomplished by filtration after cooling the gas stream to or near ambient temperatures. A series of water bubblers and condensate traps immersed in an ice-water bath, followed by a high efficiency filter proved to be a satisfactory technique.
