Abstract

This group frequently uses gas chromatographic techniques for analysis of the mixtures resulting from laser-induced reactions. In the course of recent investigations, some very interesting problems were noted as we introduced samples using a stainless steel gas sampling valve. Some effort was expended in elucidating the problem, which involved the apparent adsorption of samples onto the stainless steel surface of the valve and sampling loop. The samples involved were 2-methoxy-, 2-ethoxy-, and 2-isopropoxyethanol. Initial optimizations of the chromatographic/spectral conditions were stymied by what was initially thought to be sample contamination. Repeated analysis and injection of liquid-phase samples showed that the reagents were pure and that residual was remaining in the valve and sample loop. This note will report our observations and experimental techniques developed to remedy the problem. This information may be useful to others experiencing similar problems.
