Abstract

ADAW talked to Neeraj Gandotra, M.D., chief medical officer of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) last week about the connection between liberalized methadone take‐homes from opioid treatment programs (OTPs) and methadone overdoses (ODs). First, methadone OD deaths did not increase as a result of liberalized take‐homes, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (see No rise in methadone OD deaths with new take‐home rules, ADAW July 25; https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adaw.33506). But where did this information come from, and is there any information about increases in methadone nonfatal ODs, or methadone diversion, in the wake of the liberalized policy?
