Abstract

The term same‐sex family refers to families where one or more parents identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB). This may include same‐sex couples or single parents who identify as LGB. Many transgender parents also identify as LGB. There are increasing numbers of LGB parents in western countries. LGB people may become parents through the use of non‐traditional conception, artificial insemination (with a known or unknown sperm donor), in vitro fertilization, surrogacy, adoption, or fostering. Evidence has consistently shown that children raised by same‐sex couples have equal social, emotional, and developmental outcomes as children raised by heterosexual parents. Some children of LGB parents experience homophobic teasing or bullying at school, but research shows that in areas where acceptance and visibility of homosexuality is high, children from same‐sex families are less likely to experience teasing or harassment from their peers.
