Abstract

This discussion of Knoblauch's “Contextualizing Attunement Within the Polyrhythmic Weave: The Psychoanalytic Samba” explores the ways in which attention to somatic experiencing within the analytic dyad can enrich the depth and range of analytic exploration. The author suggests ways in which the analyst's use of language can provide a means of focusing and deepening sensate and subsymbolic experience. This commentary argues that the voice and speech of the analyst can, and needs to be, used in the service of the body (for both analyst and patient) rather than in substitution for or competition with realms of sensate and subsymbolic psychic organization.
