Abstract

Seven patients who developed mediastinal problems during pharyngolaryngo-esophagectomy and pharyngogastric anastomosis are reported. These include bleeding from the azygos vein, injury of the posterior tracheal wall, a damaged thoracic duct, and a perforated pyloromyotomy. All the patients were successfully salvaged. Prompt recognition of the problem and immediate operative management of the complication with the most direct approach contributed to a favorable outcome.
