Abstract

The projection of land now known as the Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia was formerly known as Dampier Island. It is the largest island of the Dampier Archipelago which comprises some 42 islands, islets and rock lying off the northwest coast, about 1650 km north of Perth. The Burrup Peninsula is now connected to the mainland by an artificial causeway which spans formerly tidal mudflats. The small town of Dampier, with associated jetties and facilities for the export of iron ore and salt, is built at the southwestern base of the artificial Peninsula, while a new and still expanding town, Karratha, is on the mainland on the shore of Nickol Bay.
