Abstract

Abstract The Nile Submarine Fan, in the southeastern Mediterranean, ovarlies Messinian evaporites from which vertical diffusion of salt would be expected to lead to enrichment in the salinities of sediment pore waters. Such enrichment is observed east and west of teh fan,but the only part of the fan showing enhanced salinities is at the north of the Levant Platform where there are abundant salt diapirs. No enrichment was observed on the Nile Cone, probably because thick turbidite sequences prevent significant vertical transport of salt.
