Abstract

Abstract Salome Alexandra was a Hasmonean queen ( see Hasmoneans), the wife and then successor (76–67 BCE ) of Alexander Jannaeus. She is principally mentioned in the writings of Josephus but also in Rabbinic Literature and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Her Hebrew name – Shelamzion – is recorded correctly only in the latter. Scholars assume that Jannaeus married Salome, the widow of his childless brother and predecessor Aristobulus I, in a levirate union. There is, however, no evidence for this assertion.
