Abstract

The examination of rectal swabs from 301 cats in Tehran, Iran, showed that 41 (13·6 per cent) were carriers of salmonella. The cats were from 2 sources: (a) A colony of 160 apparently healthy cats of the Iranian National Society for Protection of Animals from which 15 salmonella (9·4 per cent), mostly S. typhimurium, were isolated. (b) A total of 141 pet cats of which 26 (18·4 per cent) yielded salmonella of 16 different serotypes. In group (b) 32 cats had gastroenteritis and the rest were apparently healthy; the prevalence of the infection in the 2 groups was 37·5 and 12·8 per cent, respectively. Eight of the isolated serotypes had been associated with infant diarrhoea in Tehran.
