Abstract

Data from three sections in the central and western regions of the Alaska Coastal Current, obtained during a 10-day period in autumn 1981, are used to derive indices of salinity structure coherent with density gradients and flow. These indices showed consistent across-stream and downstream decreases which suggest removal of the freshwater signature by mixing. Baroclinic volume transport also decreased downstream, but the coastal flow still had an along-stream extent > 1000km.
