Abstract

The effect of salicylic acid (SA) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was studied on vase life of chrysanthemum flowers. Changes in fresh weight, vase life, electrolyte leakage, anthocyanin, reducing sugar and lipid peroxidation content of cut flower of chrysanthemums were investigated. Vase solutions containing 0.1 and 1.0μM SA and 0.1μM SNP increased vase life compared to the control. Sum of fresh weight loss after 10 days reduced in 0.1 and 1.0μM SA but SNP treatment increased fresh weight loss in comparison to control flowers. Anthocyanin content increased in 10μM SA and all SNP vase solutions. The malondialdehyde accumulation reduced in all SA and SNP treatments. Electrolyte leakage was lower in all SA- and SNP-treated stems. Reducing sugar contents increased with SA treatment. SNP application at 0.1 and 1μM increased reducing sugar contents in treated stems. Postharvest SA and SNP application at low concentration prolonged vase life of cut chrysanthemums by improving the membrane stability and decreasing the lipid peroxidation.
