Abstract
The meditation on the Kingdom in the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola is a text of great interest to students of Jesuit spirituality, and of its influence on devotional poetry, because of its key position in the Exercises themselves and because of its influence in the evolution of the Society of Jesus.' One of the enigmas involved in its interpretation concerns the composition of place. In the original Spanish version the retreatant is asked, rather surprisingly, to imagine Christ preaching in the 'castles' of Palestine:
