Abstract

Considering ship carbon emission, demurrage and dispatch in voyage chartering ship, the sailing speed optimization issues are presented. The sailing speed decision models under three different forms of carbon emission taxation (no carbon emission tax, taxing emissions that exceed a certain threshold, and taxing emissions based on carbon emission) are developed. An example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed models and analyze the impact of different carbon emission taxation on shipowner’s profit and ship carbon emission. It is shown that the model considering taxing carbon emissions that exceed a certain threshold is superior to the model considering taxing emissions based on carbon emission. Some useful insights are drawn from the numerical analysis.
