Abstract

SAGES has partnered with Cine-Med to produce this Grand Rounds Series. Each 2 DVD Issue covers a separate topic in Endoscopic or Laparoscopic Practice. The first DVD of each set consists of experts in the area presenting a formal, comprehensive lecture on the topic. The presenters are at the leading edge of their field and present a fairly well balanced approach to the topic, although the evidence for assertions is not necessarily reviewed or referenced. The presentations include a slide show of key points as well as video clips to illustrate technique or demonstrate the author's approach. The video is clear and easy to follow. However, many of the lectures covered a fairly wide spectrum (for example, the DVD on endoscopy went from hot biopsies all the way to esophageal plication), and it is difficult to navigate to only those sections of interest within each lecture. At the end of each issue is a moderator lead case-based discussion on challenging or controversial areas. Again, this is presented as a “how I do it” discussion, similar to what one would see in case discussions at a scientific meeting. This DVD series subscription is $295/year (4 issues) for SAGES members and $365 for nonmembers. The resident price is $175. The DVDs would be useful for review by surgeons who are hoping to expand their laparoscopic practice as an overview of the field, and a first phase in learning new techniques. For experienced surgeons, the overview and some of the “pearls” are helpful. Residents would likely find this series less useful, for the cost, as the basics from the series will be covered in their training, and the more advanced procedures require some experience to interpret.
