Abstract
Current FDA legislation in America requires all spectacle lenses and all sunglass lenses to be dispensed in specified “safety” materials. The intent of the legislation is to reduce the incidence of eye injuries. The indications and contraindications for this approach are reviewed and compared with some other approaches that may be equally effective or may even show greater cost benefit in the prevention of eye injuries. It is concluded that our existing knowledge is so limited that it is currently not possible to provide any comprehensive, fully researched, scientific basis for this or any other course of action. The analysis therefore ends with a request for additional research by a team of interdisciplinary workers as a sound basis for future action to reduce eye injuries in Australia.
