Abstract

A survey of laser safety precautions in UK laser companies is reported. Approximately 17% of the companies had experienced a laser-related accident. One in ten companies were not aware of the current laser safety standards and one in three found the standards were not readable or readily understood. Further education of the industry is necessary by increased implementation of safety strategies, codes of practice and work regimes, to minimise the risks. However, only one third of the laser companies was prepared to help in the formation of a set of practical working guidelines.
