Abstract

Successful supply of liquid helium and liquid nitrogen to the South Pole, in support of the United States Antarctic research programmes, demonstrates that a reasonable logistic plan can safely provide cryogens anywhere on earth. Investigation of a liquid nitrogen tank failure indicates no contributing cause from environmental or operational factors; this emphasizes need for care in selecting equipment.
