Abstract

This article describes the evolution of a nursing workflow for shift start safety huddles, a longstanding practice in nursing. Utilizing the lessons learned about the virtual meeting space environment, this hospital retooled the huddle to be used as a fulcrum for communication of patient and staff safety issues. In addition, the safety huddle was formatted to include announcements and celebrations in an effort to increase fellowship and community among nursing team members and foster relational connection between nursing team members and leadership. Feedback and results measure in 2 different surveys at 2 different points in time indicated the new format was seen as useful and efficient. A small change in a nursing workflow yielded large results.
