Abstract

As the leading indicator of safety-related outcomes, safety climate has been extensively studied since 1980. Nevertheless, there are some emerging issues of safety climate requiring our attention. Reporting the results of two meta-analyses and two large data collection efforts in the construction and health care industries, this symposium addresses key emerging issues in safety climate research and advances our theoretical understanding of safety climate. Specifically, the first two presentations will address optimal strategies to measure safety climate (i.e., universal versus industry-specific safety climate measures; rubric-based safety climate assessment tool). Then, the third presentation will advance our understanding of safety climate by meta-analytically examining the influence of cultural values on safety climate. Finally, the last presentation will examine the impact of safety climate and safety climate strength on safety motivation.
