Abstract

A Quality electrical power supply must be available at all times, always within the frequency and magnitude tolerance limits, and always with a perfectly sinusoidal waveform. A reliable, efficient and safe power supply is essential for guaranteeing productivity and precision in any organisation. Energy cum safety audit helps in energy cost optimization, pollution control, safety aspects and suggest the method to improve the operating and maintenance. This paper presents preliminary results from a power quality and safety audit conducted at a industry building. Voltage and current were measured at various feeders; it was found that the main problems for the equipment installed were voltage sags, surges and more THD levels than normal levels. The paper examines the causes and effects of power disturbances that affect the printing machines and other microprocessor-based equipment and analyzes the auto-protection capabilities of modern power supplies. Finally it is addresses the role of the standards on the protection of electronic equipment and the implications for the final costumer. Then it continues with installation of filters on the load side continued with constant maintaining of earthing system inorder to maintain the flow of neutral current in the feeders. This will help to maintain the system stability, reduce the losses occurring due to the presence of THD and reduce the energy bill followed by reduction of EB bus burden. The audit report basically list the recommended electrical machinery safety measure to reduce the energy and maintenance cost.
