Abstract

The use of thoracostomy to treat tension pneumothorax is a core skill for prehospital providers. Tension pneumothoraxes is potentially lethal and is often encountered in the prehospital environment. Air medical crew members have long performed thoracostomy but questions remain regarding safety, efficacy and survival. This study consists of a retrospective review of 250 patients undergoing prehospital thoracostomy performed by flight nurses and paramedics focusing on outcome, survival and complications.
