Abstract

Objectives: Determine the safety and efficacy of Arista powder in preventing postoperative bleeding during nasal septal and sinus surgery at a community hospital and surgery center. Methods: 514 consecutive patients undergoing nasal septal and or sinus surgery from March 4, 2008 until December 11, 2012 were treated with Arista powder to control hemostasis without intranasal packing material. These patients were prospectively accrued. Results: One of 514 patients experienced bleeding requiring packing of the nose postoperatively, and no patients encountered any drug reactions or complications. No patients required blood transfusion. No patients developed scarring requiring a second surgical intervention. Conclusions: The results demonstrate a highly effective and safe role for Arista powder in controlling bleeding postoperatively in a large population of nasal septal and sinus surgery patients.
