Abstract

Infantile hemangioma is the most common vascular tumor of childhood. Hemangiomas in a segmental facial distribution may be associated with structural brain, arterial, cardiac, or other malformations, components of PHACES syndrome. In this syndrome, the pharmacological treatment of hemangiomas that require systemic therapy is usually done with corticosteroids or beta-blockers. However, there have been some concerns regarding the use of beta-blockers for those patients with central nervous system arteriopathies. We herein report a case of a patient with PHACES syndrome, an extensive facial hemangioma and critical arterial malformation who was successfully treated with propranolol with no neurological or vascular complications.
