Abstract

DEAR SIR: C&EN has been providing an immeasurable service through the years by publishing reports of unknown chemical hazards as well as reviews about safe handling of dangerous chemicals. Other ACS publications have made valuable contributions to safety consciousness by articles such as the series in the Journal of Chemical Education entitled Safety in the Chemical Laboratory. Dr. Robert Cairns, in his President's Message (C&EN, Jan. 1, page 5) wrote about communication in a scientific and engineering society. In order to continue to maintain the leadership in communication among chemical scientists and engineers stressed by Dr. Cairns, it is proposed that the ACS expand its services regarding chemical safety. This effort will inform all chemists of new hazards and remind the new chemist of the old ever-present, but sometimes forgotten hazards.
