Abstract

ABSTRACT The historic city of Esfahan is renowned for its Maydan-e-Naghsh-e-Jahȃn (literally, Square of the Image of the World), which was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, in 1979. Esfahan developed in the Safavid era (1598–1736) as the first Persian garden city. This feature has not been widely recognised. This paper briefly reviews the formation of the ‘Garden City’.
