Abstract

Taking into consideration the physical and organizational structures of the Intensive Care Units of the Municipal district of Fortaleza-CE, the present study was carried out to analyze the occupational risks of the nursing team in ICUs. It is a descriptive, exploratory research accomplished from January to March 2006 in a Public Hospital of the State of Ceará. The participants were 19 professionals who accepted to take part in the research. The data were collected through semi-structured interview and enriched with data collected through observation. It was concluded that the main occupational risks were the excess of noise in the unit; the inadequate room temperature, the inobservance of the control of gases and vapors; the improper use of the equipments of individual protection during the procedures, observed in the manipulation of the medications, and also during the administration to the patients; and the exposition to radiation in the accomplishment of radiographic exams. It was also observed daily exposition to biological agents, to psychosocial factors and of ergonomic nature.
