Abstract

The impact of mental illness on the sport performance of athletes is increasingly recognized by the clinic and scientific community. The demand of elite sport influences the mental health of this population and increases the risk of mental illness. This article aims to briefly discuss the most relevant points about mental illness in athletes, as well as highlights the gaps in the literature, and indicates future directions for research and intervention in this area. Despite the existing advances on this topic, it is extremely important to promote the dissemination of scientific knowledge and actions of mental health, and to improve general quality of life of the athletes.
